Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there. -Bo Jackson
Motivation for going after your goals is powerful and tricky. Some people get discouraged and abandoned dreams. Wikipedia gives excellent definition of motivation:
Motivation is the reason for people’s actions, willingness and goals. Motivation is derived from the word motive which is defined as a need that requires satisfaction. These needs could also be wants or desires that are acquired through influence of culture, society, lifestyle, etc. or generally innate. Motivation is one’s direction to behavior, or what causes a person to want to repeat a behavior, a set of force that acts behind the motives. An individual’s motivation may be inspired by others or events (extrinsic motivation) or it may come from within the individual (intrinsic motivation). Motivation has been considered as one of the most important reasons that inspires a person to move forward.
There is positive motivation as well as negative. Positive motivation is looking positive on assignment/ task/ etc. (ie. If I finish this workout, I will feel better) while negative is more If I don’t workout I will be out of shape and a candidate for heart attack.
Create routine surrounding this goal and motivation. It is a cue for your new habit/goal/ motivation. For example, I write when I am home alone in silence or with very subtle music on (mostly Mozart).
When you find your motivation or goal, you need to schedule it. As William Faulkner said:
I only write when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes at nine every morning.
So go on and schedule your motivation!
