5 lessons I learned in 2020

In this crazy 2020, we have seen a lot. Year has started great, but from March the whole world stopped. A new virus has locked the world. Here, we had spring lock-down. Only essential workers were working. Which was okay, people understood the importance of lock-down. In the summer, we had a relaxed lock-down. Meaning, you had to have a mask on your face and use sanitizer. I was working in a clothing store in Istra and it was a great experience. From December 1st new set of rules are here. Everything is in lock-down: bars (we are known for having a cup of coffee), cinemas, theaters, restaurants, gyms, and other businesses. The unemployment rate will be huge.
How can a small business survive in 2020? Very hard, odds are against small businesses. This year will make them or break them. I am inclined to believe that majority of small businesses will not survive in 2020.
However, what can one person do in 2020? What if s/he lost his/her job? What if s/he is having crippling depression? I am not a medical expert and if you have dark thoughts and problems with depression, please go and seek professional help. For us few, who are hanging there, what we can do?
We can use this year as a learning experience. Lessons are very tough.
Here are five lessons I learned:

1.) Have an emergency fund is a must
All financial experts are saying to have an emergency fund. From 3-6 months to cover your living expenses. According to Dave Ramsey,

build a fully-funded emergency fund that covers 3–6 months of your expenses. This will protect you against life’s bigger surprises, like the loss of a job or your car breaking down, without slipping back into debt.

2.) Learn new skills & learn something that interests you
Maybe you always wanted to know about Egyptology. Now is a perfect time to take a free online class. Maybe you want to brush up your coding skills- take the class. You never know what you may need after all this calms down. If you want to know, I started to learn SQL.

3.) Start something new
You can always start your podcast/blog/ YouTube channel and see where you’ll end up. Create something that excites you and you can forget about the world for an hour or two. This year made me focus more on my blog and to grow the audience.

4.) Prepare for new type of life (previously known as new years goals)
We don’t know what will be in 2021. You can set new goals and make sure that the goals are dependent only on you (i.e. writing a book- you are the only one who can do it, you don’t depend on anyone. While goal “holding lecture in LA” depends on various factors).

You can’t do anything about it. You may as well relax and go day by day. Just roll with the punches.

I know this year has been hard on all of us, please remember to be kind to yourself and if you are an essential worker, thank you for your service.
Take care,
